Nachmittag eines Fauns

Die Recherche

In “Afternoon of a Faun”, Mono will explore desire and eroticism in the field of tension between dance and activism. He critically examines Vaslav Nijinsky's over 100-year-old work “L'après-midi d'un faune” in a queer context and restages it with the following questions:

When is the portrayal of desire and eroticism a provocative, hyped sensation? When an authentic element of emancipatory practice? How can the normative matrix be hacked in places of high culture by means of desire and queerness?

In addition to analyzing the work, Mono wants to get a more precise picture of the person Vaslav Nijinsky and understand what norms prevailed in the performing arts at the time. Vaslav Nijinsky was a bisexual person who later developed schizophrenia and repeatedly broke taboos through his artistic work. In addition, the analysis of “L'après-midi d'un faune” is intended to connect with the theories and practices of post-modern and contemporary artists, theorists and activists who are intensively engaged with body politics, structures of oppression and strategies against a white, cis-hetero, ableist and classist norm in cultural practice.

Literature as a basis for research: “Diaries” Vaslav Nijinsky, “Testo Junkie” by Paul B. Preciado and “Pleasure Activism” by Adrienne Maree Brown.

The residency is part of the “TANZPAKT in residence” program, initiated by the Verein Villa Wigman für Tanz and the TanzNetzDresden.
