Gesture from alterity

“Gestures from Alterity” brings together artists, Kate Slezak, Chiara Mila Jason, Nils Ulber, and Pedro Henrique Risse to engage in an interdisciplinary approach to body-based practices. During this residency we will work together to develop methods of relating through embodied, improvisational, and choreographic inquiry. Departing from a simultaneously grounded and expanded conception of bodies and materiality (flesh, hair, soil, water, thoughts, words, tables, sounds, feelings, ink, etc.), we will exercise our capacity to sense, feel and engage within dynamic fields of im/materialities. In attuning to our impulses and allowing ourselves to become moved, zones of creative alterity will be opened up, whereby that which we do/did not know may find a way to become; by means of exploring uncertainty, vulnerability, attentiveness, and play.

About the Artists:

Chiara Mila Jason (She/her) is an Argentinian multidisciplinary artist currently studying performative art in the fine arts academy of leipzig. In her work she often use her body as a tool for communication and plays a central role in all her pieces, her interest is focused on personal history and self-referentiality. Chiara´s creative process is not only a personal search  but also a spiritual and healing process. Her artistic practice is not only a way to express but also to create identity, as a coping strategy and a strategy of survival, as a way to resist and to dismantle antisemitic and discriminatory representation propagated by a dominant culture.

Nils Ulber schloss 2010 einen Bachelorabschluss am Hochschulübergreifenden Zentrum Tanz in Berlin mit Auszeichnung ab. Seitdem arbeitet er als Tänzer und Choreograph für und mit diversen anderen Choreographen wie Isabelle Schad, Begüm Ercias oder Rosalind Crisp.Zu seinen eigenen Arbeiten gehören „Der Husarenritt“, „Zeitgenössischer Tanz macht mich konfus“, „Move your ass and your mind will follow“, „die Physik des Aristoteles“, die in Deutschland und Europa zur Aufführung kamen.In seinen Arbeiten behandelt er oft das Miteinder und die Kommunikation von Menschen.Zu den wiederkehrenden Interessen gehört das menschliche Wesen, das sich in seiner Umwelt reflektiert und diese durch kreative Beziehungen gestaltet.

Pedro Henrique Risse ist ein Künstler, der Prozesse und Methoden für gemeinschaftliches Lernen gestaltet und entwickelt. Mit einem somatisch-ästhetischen Ansatz lädt er Gruppen dazu ein, mit Formen des Zuhörens, des gemeinsamen Denkens und der Verkörperung von Wahrnehmung zu experimentieren, indem er performative Werkzeuge einsetzt. Pedro studierte Film und freie Kunst in Porto Alegre und Berlin. Seine Arbeit wurde von mehreren Institutionen durch Förderungen und Stipendien anerkannt, darunter der Deutsche Akademische Austauschdienst, der DANCEWEB, der Fonds Soziokultur und verschiedene staatliche Kulturfonds in Brasilien und Deutschland. Pedro ist Mitglied des AND Lab: Art-thinking & Politics of Togetherness Research Centre, mit Sitz in Lissabon; dem Theaterkollektiv Gruppe TAG und dem soziokulturellen Verein interaction Leipzig e.V. Pedro hat mit renommierten Künstler:innen wie Dana Caspersen, João Fiadeiro und Nina Fischer & Maroan El-Sani zusammengearbeitet. Er unterrichtet derzeit Performance am Kunstinstitut der Universität Erfurt und hat auch Seminare an der Universität der Künste Berlin und der Theaterwissenschaft der Universität Leipzig geleitet. 

An interdisciplinary artist based in Leipzig, Germany, my (Kate Slezak) artistic practice is interested in how embodied frameworks and practices of presence inform process and performance. In 2018 I completed my BFA in Dance and Choreography from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee before moving to Europe and becoming integrated into  the independent and international art scenes in The Netherlands and Germany. In addition to facilitating spaces of collective connection through workshops and courses, a focus of my work is on site-specific performance and the body and technology in processes of industry and digitalization.
