About the training
BEFORE MOVEMENT is a research-based physical practice that focuses on what happens before movement emerges. Rather than teaching dance techniques or developing a specific movement vocabulary, it explores perception, attention, decision-making and motivation as conditions for movement.
We constantly perceive people, objects, space, distance and sound, and our bodies respond through these relationships. Through task-based experiments, improvisation and visual scores using symbols and geometric forms, participants explore relationships between the individual, others and space, as well as between stillness and movement.
Instead of asking how to move, I ask: Why do we move? When do we move? What makes us move?
BEFORE MOVEMENT invites participants to reconsider how the body emerges through its relationship with its surroundings.
The class is open to everyone and will be conducted in English.
About Keisuke
Keisuke Sugawara is a Japanese choreographer and performance artist based in Berlin. His practice explores perception through the body and the relationships between individuals, space and society.
His work investigates selfhood and how individual experiences are shaped through relationships with others and their surroundings. He develops experimental choreographic methodologies, including visual scores and task-based practices, to explore different ways of sensing, thinking and moving.
Working across performance, installation, sound, light and visual media, Sugawara creates situations in which the body and its surroundings become active fields of perception, often focusing on transition, personal transformation and the tension between individual and collective experience.
Since moving to Germany in 2017, he has presented work across Europe and Japan, with support from Fonds Darstellende Künste, Den Jyske Kunstfond, Eesti Kultuurkapital and the European Capital of Culture programme.
