Profitraining mit Luis Lara Malvacias

Awareness

The classes include a slow warm-up focusing on breathing, internal structure, weight, and the body’s articulations. Directed exercises and suggested improvisations will contribute to expanding the dancers’ physical practice and give them a deeper awareness of their own physical uniqueness. The class will offer the opportunity for the participants to deepen their perceptual abilities, advance their sensory awareness, and approach technical challenges with increased movement capability. As the class progresses, we look to integrate the parts of the body and the use of the floor, and sometimes we finish it with an individual manipulation of a provided phrase. This class is the result of personal investigations and by my many years of studying different somatic practices, particularly Klein Technique™ and the Feldenkrais Method®.

About

Luis A. Lara Malvacías is a Venezuelan choreographer and trans-disciplinary artist. His projects explore the interaction between dance, design, videos, installations, sound, and the visualarts, and reflect his experience as part of the larger diaspora of Latinx brown queer immigrant artists working in New York. His body of work looks into ideasof transformation, multiplicity, authorship, and the role of the audience indance performance. His continued questioning of preconceived ideas ofchoreography and modes of production and presentation is reflected in his solos, duets, and group work. Besides choreographing and performing, he also designs and creates costumes, sets, props, and visuals for all the creations. His work is presented under Luis Lara Malvacías / 3RD CLASS CITIZEN, and has been created, performed, and presented in New York, as well as in several countries around the world, from conventional venues to more unconventional spaces. His current projects include 26 collaborative duets with his partner Jeremy Nelson. These duets look into issues surrounding mature dance makers and inquire into the relationshipof the body thinking, the body processing, the body making, and the body performing.
